Shin Joon Hwan, an ecologist, walked along a road lined with cherry trees on the verge of blooming last week, examining the fine hairs around their dark red buds. The flowers in Gyeongju, South Korea, an ancient capital, belong to a common Japanese variety called the Yoshino, or Tokyo cherry. Mr. Shin’s advocacy group wants to replace those trees with a kind that it insists is native to South Korea, called the king cherry. “These are Japanese trees that are growing here, in the land of our ancestors,” said Mr. Shin, 67, a former director of South Korea’s national arboretum.

CNN —The cherry blossoms lining the National Mall in Washington, DC, have hit “peak bloom,” bursting open in an early spring display after a warm winter, the National Park Service announced Sunday. “PEAK BLOOM! PEAK BLOOM! PEAK BLOOM! It is the cherry trees’ second-earliest peak bloom on record and follows one of Washington’s warmest recorded winters.

TOKYO (AP) — The bid-rigging trial around the Tokyo Olympics played out Tuesday in a Japanese courtroom — more than two years after the Games closed — with advertising giant Dentsu and five other companies facing criminal charges. Executives or management-level officials at each of the accused companies, and Tokyo Olympic organizing committee official Yasuo Mori, have been charged with violating anti-monopoly laws. Speaking in Tokyo district court, he said no bid process was ever decided upon or set up by the Tokyo Olympic organizing committee. Once the Olympics landed in Tokyo, Dentsu became the chief marketing arm of the Games and raised a record $3.3 billion in local sponsorship. Takahashi was a member of the Tokyo Olympic organizing committee and wielded powerful influence over the Olympic business.

The preliminary survey of 805 unions affiliated with Rengo showed the average hike rate of 11,844 yen ($89) per month, according to the labour organisation. "Many unions received in full or exceeded their demand for wage hikes," Rengo chief Tomoko Yoshino told a news conference. Those businesses have often struggled to pass on rising costs to their customers. It's unclear whether the rising wage trend will be sustainable, let alone create the "virtuous cycle" of stronger economic growth and 2% inflation long sought by Japan's central bank.

Feb 14 (Reuters) - Meta Platforms' (META.O) Oversight Board announced Tuesday it will review more types of content moderation cases and expedite some decisions, as it aims to expand its work. The board, which has 22 members, said it will now begin publishing decisions on some cases on an expedited basis. Standard decisions, in which the Oversight Board reviews Meta's content moderation actions in depth, can take up to 90 days. Unlike standard decisions, expedited cases will be reviewed by a panel of board members instead of the full board and will not consider public comments. The board will also begin publishing summary decisions to analyze cases in which Meta changed its mind about whether to leave up or take down posts.
